 type Press release
note 102
The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) welcomes the statement made by William Hague, Minister for Disabled People, in the House of Commons during report stage of the Disability Discrimination Bill. The Committee's Chairman, Robert Taylor, commented: "My Committee had been very concerned about the exclusion of public transport vehicles from the scope of the Disability Discrimination Bill. I raised this with the Secretary of State for Transport and we are therefore delighted that the Government has understood the need to introduce appropriate provisions. "Enormous progress has already been made in improving access to public transport for disabled people but legislation in this area will ensure that we continue to make steady progress towards a fully accessible public transport system. "As advisers to the Department of Transport we have an important part to play in this and we look forward to working with the Department on the detail of the access provisions." Mr Hague announced that the Government's provisions will amend existing legislation or where necessary, introduce new powers covering all public transport modes including buses, trains, coaches, trams, taxis and underground systems. The provisions will apply to all parts of the United Kingdom and the legislation will be drafted in full consultation with interested parties. NOTES TO EDITORS 1. The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) was set up under the Transport Act 1985 to advise the Secretary of State for Transport on transport issues as they affect people with disabilities. 2.
