note 120
John Watts, Minister for Railways and Roads, has announced the appointment of Mr A J Beale as Chairman of the Rail Users' Consultative Committee for North Eastern England. The appointment will run until 31 March 1999. Mr A J Beale who lives in Corbridge, Northumberland, has 26 years of management consulting and marketing experience with the PA Consulting Group. He worked there as Marketing Consultant, Supervisor, Regional Manager and Director. He is currently a non-executive Director of Quality Street Ltd, and part-time Project Manager of Languages Lead Body. Mr Beale, a past National Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and immediate past President of the European Marketing Confederation, is also the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Charitable Trust and a Governor of the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research. RUCC Chairmen are ex-officio members of the Central Rail Users's Consultative Committee (CRUCC) which is the national body. NOTES TO EDITORS: 1. Eight RUCCs superseded the former Transport Users' Consultative Committees under the Railways Act 1993. They operate as watchdogs for users of Britain's rail services. 2. Dr Brian Mawhinney, Secretary of State for Transport, appoints the Chairmen of the regional Rail Users' Consultative Committees. 3. Users who do not receive a satisfactory response to their complaint from their train operator can contact the appropriate Committee which may be able to take up the matter on their behalf. 4. In the case of closures of services or stations, for instance, the committees have the power to hold public hearings; they can then report on possible hardships and propose amendments to alleviate them. 5. The Committees can also consider any matter which is referred to them by the Secretary of State and the Regulator, as well as any other matter that they feel they themselves should look into. The address of the North Eastern RUCC is: Hilary House 16 St. Saviour's Place YORK YO1 2PL
