type Press release note 237
The Secretary of State for Transport, Sir George Young, today welcomed the lifting of the strike threat to railway passengers. In a statement he said: "I am delighted that ASLEF have cancelled further industrial action on the railways this week and are re-balloting their members on the 3% pay offer. "This is extremely good news for passengers and industry - and the railway businesses and workforce themselves. "As an incoming Secretary of State for Transport I was concerned to see the country facing the threat of a nationwide rail strike. "I hope we can now put this dispute behind us and work together to improve the public transport network still further and encourage more passengers back on to the railways. "I very much hope that following today's talks with London Underground, the unions will accept what is a fair offer, and lift the threat of action so that London can get to work as usual."
