Regulator issues environment guidance to railway industry _______________________________________________________________
 type Press release
note ORR/96/9
Mr John Swift QC, the Rail Regulator, today introduced new environmental guidance for the railways and urged the industry to work together to bring environmental improvements to benefit everyone.
Introducing the guidance, Mr Swift said railways had a relatively good environmental record setting standards for others to follow but in some aspects performance had been patchy.
"I want to see policies, formulated and agreed by licensed operators, which commit those licensees to rules and standards aimed at improving the environmental record of the railway. I also want to see the new railway working together to share current expertise and knowledge - a true company-to-company relationship of benefit to all", Mr Swift said.
In the guidance document the Regulator sets out what he believes is the basis of an acceptable environmental policy. It should include:
a broad statement of policy; the detailed objectives; details of the systems in place to deliver the policy and the objectives; arrangements for monitoring progress; and plans for informing the Regulator of prosecutions, enforcement orders and newly agreed objectives.
