Steven Norris, Minister for Transport in London, today provided
advice for commuters intending to travel into London during the
threatened underground strike on Thursday 18 July.

He said:

"I very much hope that Thursday's strike can still be prevented.

"If Thursday's strike goes ahead - and I very much hope that, even
now, common sense will prevail and it can be averted - my advice
remains not to drive into central London unless it is absolutely
necessary.

"Wherever possible, commuters should try and use alternative forms of
public transport. Although London Underground will be running few, if
any, Tube services, both trains and buses will be in operation and
the Docklands Light Railway will be running.

"If you do have to drive in, you should tune in to local radio for
up-to-date information about conditions on the roads and the
availability of parking spaces.

"Our advice to employers wishing to make emergency arrangements for
getting their staff in to work - if it is not possible for them to
work at home - is to stagger working hours and to arrange car
sharing.

"If companies want to lay on coaches, coach parking will continue to
be available free of charge at Victoria Park in East London, and at
#6 per day in Battersea Park.

"Car parking is being made available in Docklands for connection to
the Docklands Light Railway."

PARKING DETAILS

Victoria Park - coach parking is available free of charge at Victoria
Park in Hackney, East London.

Battersea Park - coach parking is available at #6 per day in
Battersea Park.

Royal Victoria Dock - A free emergency car park, with about 1,000
spaces is being provided at Royal Victoria Dock, close by Custom
House Station on the Dockland Light Railway.

OTHER ARRANGEMENTS

The following traffic arrangements have once more been made in order
to help keep roads clear for traffic:

-Waiting restrictions will again be strictly enforced as will yellow
box junctions and bus lanes;


-London highway authorities and public utilities have been asked to
take steps to minimise disruption from roadworks;

-there will be a London-wide ban on the movement of abnormal loads
during the day;

-operators of heavy goods vehicles have been asked to avoid making
non-essential deliveries during the day;

-the London Boroughs Transport Scheme have agreed not to enforce the
night-time lorry ban during the controlled hours of the nights of 17
July and 18 July to enable businesses to make deliveries.
