As part of a ?billion national investment by Railtrack over the next four years, four stations in South Wales are set to receive a facelift worth over ?million in 1997.

Barry Island, Barry Town, Eastbrook and Penarth will have canopies replaced, platforms renewed and receive general redecoration.

At a launch at Cardiff Central station Railtrack Executive Paul Rowlands said: "South Wales and West? maintenance depot at Cardiff Canton will also receive a further massive ?7m facelift and the spend in South Wales over the next few months is over ? in all."

On the first anniversary of its privatisation, Railtrack, the national track, signal and station owner, has earmarked a ?billion regeneration programme for 2,500 stations throughout Britain.

In the first phase 15 stations on Railtrack Great Western will benefit from this programme. ? m will be invested in local stations to repair damaged buildings, roofs and footbridges, improve passenger information facilities, enhance station facilities and provide a more pleasant physical environment for customers.

Work has already begun at most of the sites and is due for completion this summer.
