A £23 million investment in new signalling for the Guildford area has received the green light from Railtrack with workers now arriving on site.
Commenting on the proposals, Railtrack Zone Director, Chris Jago said: "This is excellent news for rail users. This investment is a sign of our commitment to deliver a railway for the 21st Century"
Although it may mean some temporary disruption for passengers travelling through Guildford in the short term, the work will mean that train operators will be able to match improved operational flexibility with improved reliability."
The work will cover the resignalling of 41 route miles in the Guildford area between Worplesdon and Farncombe, Ash and Shalford and Effingham Junction and Guildford. A new signalling centre will be built at Guildford and there will also be some refurbishment work done on level crossings in the area.
The work is due for completion in early 1999. Once finished the scheme will mean that modern signalling will be in place along a stretch of line from Surbiton to Farncombe.
"Unfortunately major railway construction work like this does involve some noise but we are working with our contractors, GEC Alsthom, to ensure that disruption to local residents is kept to a minimum," added Mr Jago.
