Forty-five-year-old Roderick (Rod) Muttram is to be appointed Railtrack's new Safety and Standards Director.

Currently Director, Electrical Engineering and Control Systems at Railtrack, he joined the company in January 1994 from Thorn EMI Electronics where he was Director and General Manager, Defence Systems Division.

He succeeds David Rayner who has decided to retire from Railtrack at the end of the year. Rod will become Director designate on 1 September and take over fully at a date to be agreed before the end of the year.

Announcing the intention to appoint Rod Muttram to the board, Railtrack Chairman Sir Robert Horton said: "This latest appointment confirms Railtrack's commitment to safety. Rod has demonstrated his ability to carry responsibility in demanding situations in his current role and he has a high level of technical expertise. He also brings over 20 years experience of managing safety matters in other industries including nuclear, defence and heavy process. This combination makes him a fitting choice to succeed David Rayner and join the Railtrack Group Board.

"At the same time I would like to thank David for his excellent contribution to the company in the last few years and the railway industry for many more years. His knowledge and experience will be much missed and his contribution to the industry will be with us for many years to come. We wish him well on his retirement" he concluded.

Rod Muttram said: "Rail is already the safest form of surface transport. I am determined to ensure that improvements in safety performance continue and look forward to working with everyone in the industry to achieve that objective."

Educated in Newbury, Berkshire, he then went to the Victoria University of Manchester where he gained a BSc (Hon) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer, a fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, a fellow of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers and a member of both the Institute of Management and the Institute of Directors. He is married with four children and lives near Cranleigh, Surrey.
