A teaching pack to help children learn about the railway is on its way to all Essex primary schools.
'It's Our Railway' has been developed by Railtrack and is aimed at 8-11 year olds. The pack gives suggestions to the teacher as to how to use the railway as background to every school subject from art to science. Most importantly it has been designed by teachers to fit in with the National Curriculum. The pack includes project cards, a colour wallchart and teachers' guide.
'Safety Sam' a cool cartoon rabbit is also on every project card to teach children that the railway must never be used as a playground.
"The railway passes through an enormous number of communities and we wanted to make a contribution to them", commented Michael Holden, Railtrack East Anglia's director.
"The pack will provide schools with extra teaching materials - something we know they always need more of.
"It has also given us a chance to include some safety messages. The railway often acts as a magnet to children, especially if they're bored during school holidays. We have had instances of children playing on linesides in rural areas as well as in more urban areas, and they just don't realise the danger they are putting themselves in", he added.
'It's Our Railway' is also being launched in Norfolk, Suffolk, parts of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, and London.
