Railtrack lets ground breaking resignalling contract

A ground breaking contract has been awarded today by Railtrack to CSEE Transport, the French subsidiary of Italian signalling manufacturer Ansaldo Signal NV. The two-phase contract, worth £13 million, is to provide a complete new signalling system on the Nuneaton to Peterborough line.

CSEE Transport were chosen following a tendering process which included companies from the UK, Europe and the US.

The company will be putting together detailed design work during phase one, which is expected to take the next twelve months, with implementation as phase two.

The 54 mile double track route will be updated by:-

o Transfer of control of line to Leicester signalling control centre

o Installation of Ansaldo Signal's Microlok® II system of signalling interlockings

o Provision of axle counters

o Automation of eleven crossings

o CCTV to 3 barrier crossings

o Installation of five crossovers

o Installation of new point heaters

This is the first contract to be let by Railtrack's Signalling Partnership Project. The group is working with the signalling supply industry to find new technology solutions for resignalling projects and introduce new suppliers to the UK.

Brian Mellitt, Railtrack's director of engineering and production commented:-

"In order for us to meet our commitment to achieve the £4 million a day spend on the railway's infrastructure, it is important that we bring international suppliers into the arena. This will enable us to benefit from any new advances in technology developed outside of the UK and will help us to get the best possible value from our investments.

"CSEE Transport has met our specification and will be bringing technology to our railway network which has been tried and tested elsewhere in the world."
