Construction workers now on site at Swindon station are carrying out ?0,000 of work as part of Railtrack's multi million pound station regeneration programme.

The work will see repairs to the platform surfaces, refurbishment of the station building, re-painting where appropriate and repairs to stone work and brickwork.

Railtrack's Project Manager Martin Warren said: "The work at this station and at hundreds across the country is designed to bring stations to an acceptable standard that we, our train operator colleagues and the station users can be proud of.

"The travelling public who use these stations should be able to feel they are part of a caring, clean, environmentally-friendly organisation. The station should enhance the start and finish of their journey."

When Railtrack was formed, it inherited stations in various stages of repair and disrepair. The ?billion regeneration programme, which will be carried out over the next five years, plans to take in all of the UK's railway stations as part of Railtrack's commitment to create a railway fit for the 21st Century.
