Train Operators today reacted enthusiastically to Government plans to introduce road charging in city centres.
They particularly welcomed the insistence by John Prescott, Deputy Prime Minister, that all the money raised would be spent on improving public transport.
"This is a vital first step towards a real integrated transport policy," said Ivor Warburton, Chairman of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC).
"We are delighted the Government is giving the public a lead in this way. We hope it will provide a major incentive for motorists to leave their cars at home when using public transport would be more appropriate."
