Previously Group Finance Director with Grand Metropolitan PLC, the international branded food and drinks group, Mr Corbett succeeds John Edmonds, who is retiring after 37 years in the railway industry. Announcing the appointment, Railtrack Chairman Sir Robert Horton said: "I am delighted to confirm Gerald's appointment today as I am convinced that his commercial expertise is vital in leading Railtrack forward as the new railway industry develops." Mr Corbett is a scholar of Pembroke College, Cambridge, from which he graduated with an MA in history. After studying at the London and Harvard business schools, he was awarded a masters degree, with distinction, in Business Studies. From 1975-82 he worked for the Boston Consulting Group, the international management consulting firm which specialises in corporate strategy. He held senior positions at Dixons Group PLC, the electrical retailer, from 1982-87 before becoming Group Finance Director of Redland PLC, the international building materials company. In 1993 he was appointed Group Finance Director of Grand Metropolitan PLC. He is also a non-executive director of the property group MEPC PLC. Confirming the appointment, Mr Corbett said: "I am delighted to be taking up this position. Railtrack is making enormous strides forward in the railway industry and I am looking forward to playing a part. "Under John Edmonds, a great deal of work has already been done. The whole industry is becoming more customer focused and performance orientated. I will have a sound management team around me to continue the trend of improving performance and increasing investment. Together we will go forward to realise the Chairman's vision to create the best railway in the world," he said. Married with four children, Mr Corbett lives in Redbourn, Hertfordshire.
