The five Regulators for water, telecommunications, rail, gas and electricity have today set out arrangements for working closely together on a range of cross-industry issues.
In a joint statement published today by the Office of Water Services (Ofwat), the Office of Telecommunications (OFTEL), the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM) the Office of Electricity Supply and Gas for Northern Ireland (OFREG) and the Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR), the Regulators have agreed to strengthen and put on a formal basis their current arrangements for working together.
As already happens, the Regulators themselves will meet five times a year. In addition, joint working groups will look at specific issues such as the introduction of the new Competition Act, Millennium compliance and publication of price comparison information.
Announcing publication of the statement on behalf of the Regulators Ian Byatt, Director General of Water Services, said today:"Today’s statement is an important step to strengthen and formalise the existing close working relationships between the Regulators.
"There have already been major structural changes with the establishment of combined regulatory offices for gas and electricity in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
"Co-operation between regulators is increasingly important as we tackle similar issues. We believe it is in the public interest for us to both formalise and intensify our joint working.
"The statement sets out both the existing areas of joint work and the new areas of work that we will undertake in the future."
Although the statement only covers the work of OFTEL, Ofwat, OFGEM, OFREG and ORR, individual regulators also have regular contact on a range of topics with the Office of Fair Trading and the Competition Commission.
