A £350m boost to London Underground's communications system was welcomed today by Transport Minister Keith Hill.
The 'Connect' PFI project will revolutionise the Underground's communication system and improve customer service and safety.
Keith Hill said:
"This deal is excellent news. Connect will provide a modern integrated radio system across the entire Underground network – meaning better communication between staff, improved information for passengers and further improvement in the Underground's already impressive safety record.
"Private Finance Initiatives like this will help to realise our vision of a modern, safer and more reliable tube for the twenty-first century.
"We hope that these improvements, together with the extra resources we have provided to London Transport, will help improve the quality of journeys for Tube passengers."

1. London Transport today announced the signature of a contract with the Citylink Telecommunications Ltd (CTL) consortium for a major communications project called 'Connect'. The consortium consists of Racal Services (Communications) Ltd, Fluor International Ltd, Motorola Ltd, Charterhouse Project Equity Investments Ltd and Hyder Investments Ltd.
2. The project will bring some £350m of investment to the Underground, much of which will be in the first four years.
3. Before contracts were signed, the project was reviewed to ensure that it was compatible with the Government's Public Private Partnership plans for the London Underground, announced by the Deputy Prime Minister on 20 March last year. The review concluded that they were compatible and that Connect should go ahead.
