The first new train in the county for 6 years signals more train services and more carriages from May
Britain's newest train, the Class 170 Turbostar makes its first appearance in Worcester today (Monday 6 March). The first new passenger train to arrive in the County since 1994, it will be based in Worcester for the next 6 weeks as local train crews begin their familiarisation training on the new train. It will go into full passenger service from May.
The 100-mph Turbostar offers the latest standards of air-conditioned comfort, convenience and speed. It is being introduced to improve the quality of rail travel on Central Trains long distance services and to provide more capacity. One of the first of a fleet of 33 new trains being built for Central Trains it represents a total investment of over £74 million. The Turbostar will provide a step change in the quality of rail travel in Worcestershire, its introduction will also free up existing rolling stock enabling Central Trains to introduce three additional train services and to add extra carriages to others.
Commenting on the new trains Central Trains Managing Director Andy Cooper says "I know that new trains have long been promised for Worcester rail services, I am delighted that they have now arrived on schedule to allow driver training to begin. Behind the new Turbostar train is our commitment to provide the very best network of services that will tempt people away from the private car. It will operate on Central's long distance routes alongside our popular refurbished air-conditioned Class 158 sprinter trains between Birmingham and Cardiff via Worcester".
The new trains will free up existing rolling stock allowing the following new train services to be introduced: 08.00 Worcester to Birmingham New St via Bromsgrove, 17.42 Birmingham New St to Worcester, 18.14 Birmingham New St to Kidderminster. Extra carriages will be added to the following services. 06.53 Worcester to Birmingham Snow Hill, 07.03 Gt Malvern to Birmingham Snow Hill via Worcester and the 17.50 Birmingham Snow Hill to Worcester.
