The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) today announced a one week extension for the 2 for 1 Senior and Young Person Railcard promotion. The promotion, which was due to finish at 8pm on 5 May, has been extended to 8pm on the 12 May.

ATOC Director of Public Communications, Dr Elizabeth Haywood said the promotion was extended due to overwhelming demand at the call centre which has led to many callers being unable to get through to operators on 08705 125 241 to purchase their Railcards.

"When we prepared our business plan for the promotion earlier in the year, we expected sales of about 6,000 Railcards. We are now into the fourth week and have answered more than 18,000 calls and issued over 23,000 Railcards.

"In the first week, our call centre trebled the amount of staff and phone lines in order to meet demand which is still very high.

"We apologise to the many callers who have been unable to get through. We want to make this promotion available to everyone who wants to take part in it and therefore we will re-evaluate demand to the call centre on May 10 to decide if a further extension is necessary," Dr Haywood said.
