TODAY'S Passenger Rail Performance statistics published by the shadow Strategic Rail Authority confirm Connex's improving punctuality and reliability performance during the past three months as well as Connex South Central's status of best performing commuter Train Operating Company on the intensively worked railway south of the Thames.
The published figures represent a Moving Monthly Average over a quarterly period, but the month by month statistics those most significant to customers are showing a rising trend.
Since June, Passengers Charter punctuality on Sussex Coast routes has risen from 84.6 to 88.7 per cent and reliability from 99.2 to 99.3 per cent. South London Lines punctuality has improved from 89.7 to 94.5 per cent while reliability has declined only marginally by 0.6 per cent.
Kent Link punctuality has improved from 76.1 to 87.6 per cent and reliability from 98 to 98.9 per cent. On Kent Coast routes, punctuality has risen from 84 to 86.5 per cent and reliability from 99 to 99.2 per cent.
Connex Managing Director Olivier Brousse said: We are heartened that hard work by all our people is driving up punctuality and reliability, and our customers will have noticed our improved provision of information and cleanliness of trains. However, we can do better and are still working hard to raise our game.
But we will achieve the step change improvement only with the massive investment we have proposed for the replacement South Central franchise.
Performance on the South Eastern franchise has been badly affected by serious incidents outside the control of Connex such as a gas leak at Sittingbourne and a National Grid power surge in the Tonbridge and Dartford areas. The intensity of timetables on this busy part of the railway makes recovery from such disruption very difficult.
Olivier Brousse said: Also, South Eastern performance remains badly affected by the continuing speed restriction through Strood Tunnel, and we shall continue to work with Railtrack for restoration of normal speed at the earliest opportunity.
