The latest figures for performance on the rail network are released today by the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA), covering the period 10 December 2000 to 3 March 2001. The marked improvement since the Hatfield accident can be seen, and half the operators registered an improvement on the previous month. Overall network performance was around the 75% level during February. Early indications suggest that performance levels have risen above 80% during the first two weeks of April.

A notable improvement in performance was seen on Silverlink, which achieved 83.2% during the month of February, compared with a poor figure of 35.7% in January. There was also significant improvement in performance in February on Midland Mainline (up 9%) and Chiltern (up 9%).

Emergency speed restrictions continue to have an adverse impact on the long distance routes, and were partly to blame for poor performance in February on the First Great Eastern, South West Trains, Thameslink and WAGN operations as well. Performance on GNER was also affected by the accident near Selby on 28 February. Severe weather has had an impact on the network, particularly ScotRail, where heavy snow blocked lines in the Highlands in February.
