SRA Chairman, Richard Bowker, said: "Today's appointments will restore leadership for the managers and staff who daily operate at the sharp end of the industry .
"I am looking forward to meeting with John at the earliest opportunity to start working together on delivering the improvements needed on the rail network."
Chief Executive, Mike Grant, commented: "I have known John Armitt for a number of years and have the highest regard for his experience and ability.
