Commenting on the planned industrial action by RMT members at Arriva Trains Northern and South West Trains that will inconvenience thousands of passengers, the Association of Train Operating Companies today reiterated its view that strikes and work to rules have no place in a public transport service.
ATOC Director General, George Muir, said: "There is a better way forward for our staff and passengers through modern industrial relations. This means developing local agreements, supporting staff in training and seeking to involve everyone within the company in a single team to deliver for passengers. It also means that train companies will stand firm in the face of unreasonable union demands."
Mr Muir, commenting on union demands for a return to national pay bargaining, described that as jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. "It has been tried before and it did not work. Passengers would face national strikes as well as local strikes."
