The Strategic Rail Authority said today that the decision to list the Braithwaite Viaduct at the Bishopsgate Goodsyard site, announced by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport, will delay the East London Line Extension, which runs nearby.

Demolition of structures on the site adjoining the viaduct is essential for the Extension, which is promoted jointly by the SRA, TfL and London Underground and has been welcomed by the Mayor as a key London project. The extension, on which work has already begun, will connect the existing East London Line infrastructure into the national rail North and South London Lines, enabling through services.

SRA Chairman Richard Bowker said:

"The SRA has committed to the East London Line Extension as a priority project. The scheme was fully debated during the extensive Transport & Works Act hearing, and is important in persuading more people onto public transport. It will reduce overcrowding on other routes, speed journey times within London, and - not least - help regenerate East London.

"Today's listing excludes the structures adjoining the viaduct. We are now considering very carefully what impact that might have - but we remain determined to get the line built."
