Alistair Darling, Secretary of State for Transport has appointed David Leeder as the new Vice-Chair of the Commission for Integrated Transport. David takes over from Sir Trevor Chinn whose appointment concludes on 30 June.

The Secretary of State has also appointed Garrett Emmerson, Peter Hendy and Richard Turner as members of the Commission.

All the appointments will begin on 1 July 2004 and will run for a period of three years.

Notes to Editors

1. The Commission for Integrated Transport provides independent advice to Government on future transport policy options, the potential for new technology, the identification of best practice in transport and on transport issues which cross departmental boundaries. CfIT advises on Transport issues across England and those non-devolved issues across the United Kingdom.

2. The Commission is chaired by Professor David Begg. It is made up of 13 executive members with experience across a broad range of issues and 5 ex-officio members who represent the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee, the Strategic Rail Authority, the Highways Agency, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Confederation of British Industry.

Biographical details for new appointments

* David Leeder is the Managing Director of First Group Plc's UK Bus Division and a member of the First Group Plc Board. He is former President and now Board Member of the Confederation of Passenger Transport. He has been a Board member of the Commission for Integrated Transport since June 1999 and was a Director at Transport 2000.

* Garrett Emmerson is Head of Transportation at Buckinghamshire County Council. He is also a member of Transport Advisory Groups for both the Local Government Association and the South East Regional Assembly.

* Peter Hendy is the Managing Director of Surface Transport at Transport for London. He is the former Deputy Director (UK Bus) of First Group Plc and a former Director of New World First Bus (Hong Kong).

* Richard Turner is the Chief Executive of the Freight Transport Association. He is also a Board Member of the Institution of Highways and Transportation and a member of the CBI's Transport Policy Committee.
