Alistair Darling, Secretary of State for Transport has appointed Peter Hendy as the new Chair of the Commission for Integrated Transport. Peter takes over from Professor David Begg whose appointment concluded on 31 March. David Leeder has been acting Chair in the interim.

Peter's appointment will begin on 1 July 2005 and will run for a period of three years.

Notes to Editors

1. The Commission for Integrated Transport provides independent advice to Government on future transport policy options, the potential for new technology, the identification of best practice in transport and on transport issues which cross departmental boundaries. CfIT advises on Transport issues across England and those non-devolved issues across the United Kingdom.

2. As well as the Chair the Commission is made up of 13 executive members with experience across a broad range of issues and 5 ex-officio members who represent the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee, Network Rail, the Highways Agency, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Confederation of British Industry.

3. Peter Hendy is the Managing Director of Surface Transport at Transport for London. He is responsible for London Buses (and East Thames Buses, the public sector operator), the Public Carriage Office, which regulates taxis and private hire vehicles, Croydon Tramlink, Dial-a-Ride, Victoria Coach Station, passenger services serving TfL piers on the River Thames, Street Management, the Transport for London Road Network, congestion charging, traffic management, road safety, walking, cycling and in addition TfL's corporate interest in Transport Policing and Enforcement.

4. Prior to joining TfL, Peter was previously Deputy Director - UK Bus for FirstGroup plc. In this role he was responsible for FirstGroup bus operations in London and southern England, bus development and policy issues and light rail, including the operation of Croydon Tramlink.

5. From 1994 to 2000 he was a Council member of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, and was formerly a member of the Industrial Tribunals.

6. He has been a member of CfIT since 1 July 2004.

7. As Chair of CfIT Peter Hendy will be paid £30,000 pa for 5 days a month.
