Following the christening of the first of its brand new ‘Pioneer’ trains, Hull Trains named the second train in its fleet after another figure that made his mark on the city. The ‘Professor Stuart Palmer’ was named in a ceremony at Paragon Station in Hull on Tuesday, July 12 at 11.30pm, at which Professor Palmer was joined by members of his family.
Professor Palmer was responsible for major breakthroughs in the field of Ultrasound Bone Densitometry, through his work with his then student Dr. Christian Langton (now Reader in Medical Physics and Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Medical Institute at The University of Hull). His work in this field opened up the practise of Ultrasound for commercial use and is now used worldwide for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as osteoporosis and monitoring foetal development during pregnancy. Although no longer working in Hull, Professor Palmer maintains strong links with the city, and still has a boat moored in the city’s Marina!
The work of Professor Palmer contributed greatly to the establishment of Hull as not only a leading research hub but also a recognized centre for excellence in the treatment of cancer and bone deficiencies. This tradition continues in the city today, with The Hull York Medical School (HYMS) emerging as one of the best training facilities of its kind in the country. This reputation was cemented when it was placed second in the subject category of the 2005 Guardian university rankings this year. The desire to be at the forefront of scientific and medical technology is also evident in the innovative work of the brand new Eye hospital and the Women and Children’s hospital based in Hull.
Hull Trains’ Managing Director, Mark Leving, commented: “The work of Professor Palmer and the team at The University of Hull had a huge impact on the world of medical science and the ongoing benefits of this are incalculable.
“Professor Palmer paved the way for revolutionary treatments for serious medical conditions to become widely available and it was his foresight and innovation that made this possible. This pioneering spirit made Professor Palmer an obvious choice for the name of our next Class 222 Pioneer train. It is great to see this spirit alive in the city today and all of us at Hull Trains are proud to be a part of it. We are delighted that Professor Palmer joined us yesterday to see the ‘Professor Stuart Palmer’ off on its maiden voyage.”
Professor Palmer said: “It is a pleasure to be back in Hull and to see the city thriving. The service that Hull Trains offers opens up a world of business opportunities which can only improve the standing of the city. It was very exciting to see my namesake when I arrived in Hull and the whole family had a lovely day in the city.”
