type Press release

From Sunday 9 October 2005, train operator First ScotRail is withdrawing smoking on its Caledonian Sleeper service.

The introduction of the no smoking policy comes as the company embarks on a £1million upgrade and refurbishment of its increasingly popular overnight service between Scotland and London, which will see a number of improvements enhance passenger comfort. The significant investment is part of First ScotRail’s commitment to the service and includes the implementation of new vanity units in the berths, new worktops and replaced toilet facilities. In addition, the seated carriages will be fully refurbished whilst the First Class lounge car will be furnished with comfortable sofas as well as new tables and chairs allowing passengers to sit back and relax with a drink or a snack from the bar.

The move to withdraw smoking in the lounge area of the Sleeper is a response to customer feedback and brings the Sleeper in line with all other First ScotRail services which have a no smoking policy. It will also provide a more pleasant environment for passengers while they travel.

Gordon Dewar, Commercial Director for First ScotRail said, “Having monitored public opinion and customer feedback on smoking, we have responded to our passengers’ desire for a smoke free environment. From today, smoking will no longer be permitted on our Caledonian Sleeper service, which, along with the refurbishment, will provide a better overall journey experience for our passengers.”

Passengers on the Caledonian Sleeper can already tuck in to the new complimentary breakfasts now being served in both First and Standard Class. First Class passengers can enjoy fresh healthy options such as yoghurt and fruit salad as well as the traditional bacon or scrambled egg roll, whilst Standard Class passengers will receive a breakfast box, with mini croissant, muffin and muesli / yoghurt pot.
