A best time of 4 hours 24 minutes will be scheduled from Glasgow Central to London Euston by Virgin Pendolino train on weekdays – 15 minutes less than now and 49 minutes faster than before the first stage of route improvements last year. Accelerations of up to 21 minutes on Monday 12 December follow previous reductions in journey times in September 2004 when the line was modernised between Crewe and London. Clearance of the route for faster running north of Crewe will deliver gains for Glasgow, Motherwell, Lockerbie, Carlisle, Penrith, Oxenholme, Lancaster and Preston. Two additional calls at Lockerbie will give the town its first regular direct trains to London for many years. Virgin West Coast Managing Director Charles Belcher said: "Our Pendolino trains won many new customers to rail following last year's timetable improvements. The new journey times are even better and I am sure this will be very welcome in Lancashire, Cumbria and Scotland."
