The Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander, today announced the re-appointment of Sir David O'Dowd as Deputy Chair and Member of the British Transport Police (BTP) Authority. The Authority's role is to maintain and oversee a police force for the railways. The Authority was established on 1 July 2004, under the chairmanship of Sir Alistair Graham, to enhance the status and public accountability of the BTP. NOTES TO EDITORS 1. All members of the Authority are appointed in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. 2. Sir David O'Dowd has been appointed for four further years from 1 July 2007. Remuneration will be £24,760 per annum for a time commitment of 50 days per annum. BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS Sir David O'Dowd CBE; QPM was the Chief Constable of Northamptonshire Police from 1986 until 1993, before becoming HM Inspector of Constabulary for the East of England and the Metropolitan Police for three years. During that time he served on numerous committees and also in an advisory capacity to government bodies. He was Head of Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary from 1996 to 2001, developing a deep understanding of government and comparative policing across its strategic and tactical spectrum. Immediately upon retirement in 2002, he was appointed by the then Home Secretary to chair a dedicated 'National Task Force' to reduce bureaucracy throughout the British Police Service which reported in September of that year. Sir David has been Deputy Chair of the BTP Authority for the past two and a half years. He is a Deputy Lieutenant and the current High Sheriff of Northamptonshire (until March 2007). He also Chairs Victim Support in that County and serves as a governor of the University of Northampton.
