note DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT News Release (025) issued by The Government News Network on 13 February 2008

The Transport Minister, Tom Harris, today announced the appointment of Ian Dobbs as a Member of the British Transport Police (BTP) Authority.

The Authority's role is to maintain and oversee a police force for the railways. The Authority was established on 1 July 2004, under the chairmanship of Sir Alistair Graham, to enhance the status and public accountability of the BTP.

Notes to Editors

1. All members of the Authority are appointed in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

2. Ian Dobbs has been appointed for four years from 12 February 2008. Remuneration will be £14,881 per annum for a time commitment of 30 days per annum.

3. One outcome of the 2006 review of the BTP was a decision to appoint two additional members of the Authority "who have knowledge of and experience in relation to the interests of persons providing railway services". We have advertised for a further industry appointment to fulfill this commitment.

4. This will be Ian Dobbs' first public appointment and he has declared no political activity.

Biographical Details

Educated at the University of Dundee, Nottingham-born Ian Dobbs spent 16 years with British Rail, progressing from graduate operations management trainee to Divisional Director at Great Eastern.

In 1993 Ian was headhunted by the Victorian Government in Australia to lead its transport reform agenda as Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Public Transport Corporation.

He is married with two teenage children. In 2005 Ian persuaded his family to leave the sunshine of Australia to come back to England after accepting the challenge of heading up Stagecoach's rail division, replacing retiring chairman Graham Eccles.
