type Press release

South West Trains today (4 February 2009) announced it is proposing to make a further reduction of 180 posts at the company as part of its ongoing review of its cost base.

The proposals, which are subject to consultation with employees, are in addition to the 480 job reductions announced last month.

Positions involved include revenue protection roles, ticket office and station staff and further management and administrative posts.

Drivers, guards and frontline fleet maintenance staff will not be affected by the proposed changes and South West Trains is continuing to operate the same number of train services for its passengers.

South West Trains is managing its cost base to ensure it is operating as efficiently as it can in view of reduced passenger growth and an increasingly challenging economic climate.

The company will continue to review its operation and take any further steps required to ensure it has a secure business for the long term.

Our priority will remain maintaining services to our customers, protecting jobs for the majority of our people and providing a strong foundation for growth when the economy improves.

ENDS
