Responding to the DfT’s transport resilience report, Michael Roberts, director general of industry body the Rail Delivery Group, said:
"The report recognises the progress we have made in recent years to improve our response to extreme weather conditions, but we want to do more.
"Network Rail (NR) will invest £38 billion over the next five years in maintaining and renewing track and signals, as well as specific measures to improve the railway's resilience to weather such as better drainage and smarter monitoring."
"Cross-industry work is already under way to improve railway asset management and timetable planning, and operators will continue to work closely with NR to ensure that passengers get accurate, consistent and relevant information when adverse weather causes disruption to their journey.
"Rail plays a vital role in keeping Britain moving and we will work with the government to ensure that resources are focused on the areas that matter most to both customers and the wider economy."
