Transport Minister, Edwina Hart, has announced that the contract for the North South express train service will be extended for another three years.

The Welsh Government funded-service, also known as Y Gerallt Gymro, will continue to run at the same times as before, offering reduced journey times with business class and dining facilities not available in the standard trains. The new contract will ensure the service continues until the end of the current Wales and Border franchise in October 2018.

The Minister said: I am committed to improving journey times and transport links between North and South Wales to promote economic growth. The express train service has proved popular with business travellers and this new contract will ensure it continues until the end of the current franchise. We are continually working to improve this service, including introducing a new business class and investing in rail infrastructure to further reduce the journey time.

The North South express service operates Monday to Friday, departing Holyhead at 05:33 arriving in Cardiff Central at 09:58, returning at 17:16 arriving in Holyhead at 21:45, travelling via Wrexham and Chester.

Trn cyflym o'r Gogledd i'r De wedi'i gadw am dair mlynedd arall

Mae Edwina Hart, y Gweinidog Trafnidiaeth, wedi cyhoeddi bod y contract ar gyfer y gwasanaeth tren cyflym o'r Gogledd i'r De wedi'i gadw am dair mlynedd arall.

Mae'r gwasanaeth o'r enw Y Gerallt Gymro, sydd wedi'i ariannu gan Lywodraeth Cymru, yn parhau i redeg ar yr un amser, gan gynnig amseroedd teithio llai, heb ddosbarth busnes a chyfleusterau bwyty ar y trenau safonol. Bydd y contract newydd yn sicrhau bod y gwasanaeth yn parhau hyd at ddiwedd masnachfraint bresennol Cymru a'r Gororau ym mis Hydref 2018.

Meddai'r Gweinidog: "Rwyf wedi ymrwymo i wella amseroedd teithio a chysylltiadau rhwng Gogledd a De Cymru i hybu twf economaidd. Mae gwasanaeth y tren cyflym wedi bod yn boblogaidd i deithwyr busnes a bydd y contract hwn yn sicrhau ei fod yn parhau hyd at ddiwedd y fasnachfraint bresennol. Rydym yn gweithio'n barhaus i wella'r gwasanaeth hwn, gan gynnwys cyflwyno dosbarth busnes newydd a buddsoddi yn y seilwaith trenau i dorri mwy ar amseroedd teithio."

Mae'r gwasanaeth cyflym o'r Gogledd i'r De ar gael o ddydd Llun i ddydd Gwener, gan adael Caergybi am 05:33 a chyrraedd Caerdydd Canolog am 09:58, a dychwelyd am 17:16, gan gyrraedd Caergybi am 21:45, a theithio drwy Wrecsam a Chaer.
