Transport Minister Baroness Kramer unveils state of the art facility adding 500 cycle spaces at Brighton railway station.
Cyclists in Brighton will be able take advantage of a new £1.5 million cycle and community hub unveiled by Transport Minister Baroness Kramer today (26 March 2015).
Baroness Kramer said:
Our ambition is to encourage people to cycle more often. This government has announced £15 million of funding to improve cycling facilities at rail stations and hubs like this one in Brighton will help make that vision a reality.
We are serious about getting people on their bike and this fantastic facility will make it easier and more convenient for people to cycle to and from their station. Cyclists will be able to leave their bike with confidence knowing it will be safe and secure.
The Department for Transport provided £650,000 funding for the hub, with additional contributions from Brighton and Hove City Council, Southern Railway and Network Rail.
Last year the government announced £15 million of investment to improve cycle-friendly facilities at railway stations across the country, making it easier to rail passengers to cycle to and from their local station.
The new Brighton cycle hub will provide an additional 500 secure cycle parking spaces in a new state of the art facility at the rear of the station open to rail and non-rail users alike.
The centre also offers a bike repair and maintenance workshop, and a coffee shop for visitors. New keep fit facilities, offering classes such as yoga and bike spinning, showers, changing rooms and accessible toilets are due to open shortly.
The additional 500 parking spaces in the new hub brings the total number of cycle parking spaces at the station to around 800, helping cut pollution, ease road congestion and meeting higher demand for facilities allowing people to park their bike and take the train.
