Strikes by train drivers affecting Southern Railway services this week are causing "needless disruption" and are not about safety, Rail Delivery Group chief executive Paul Plummner has said.
Paul Plummer said:
“Rail companies are trying to modernise the way they work to give customers better, more punctual, more comfortable services, but hundreds of thousands of passengers are suffering needless disruption because of these strikes - despite independent expert evidence that safety isn't at risk. Trains where drivers close the doors are safe.
“The truth is that these strikes are not about safety, not about jobs, and not about customer service. It’s time the RMT and ASLEF explained to passengers what the strikes are really about. The railway must embrace new technology and smarter ways of working that benefit our customers.”
