Passenger numbers have doubled in the last 20 years, with people attracted by discount fares and better services. More revenue thanks to the growth in journeys enables more investment to improve services for customers.

o There are 4.6million passenger journeys a day on the railway on average (1.7billion a year);
o A third (33 per cent) of all rail journeys are taken using discounted fares;
o Working together train companies are taking action to:
- make ticket choices simpler and clearer for customers – trialling changes that could lead to the most radical overhaul of the fares system for more than 30 years;
- enabling more people to buy cheaper Advance fares on the day of travel; and
- introducing smarter ticketing to make it easier to buy the right fare.
o We have one of the safest railways in Europe;
o 20 years ago, our railway ran at a £2billion a year loss day-to-day. Now it contributes £200million towards improving the railway for the long term;
o Payments from train operators to government increased from £57billion [[later corrected to read £57million]] (2010-11) to more than £800million (2014-15) and are forecast to be £1.3billion in 2016-17.
