Anglia Railways
The first East Anglia franchise, covering a smaller network than the subsequent 'Greater Anglia' contracts, was awarded on 6 December 1996 for 7 years 3 months. When Anglia Railways was shortlisted for the next franchise in 2003 FirstGroup bought the franchise owner GB Railways Group, but the next contract was awarded to National Express. First also incidentally gained GB Railfreight (GBRf), which had been founded by GB Railways in 1999, and retained it until the business was sold to Groupe Eurotunnel on 1 June 2010.
