::: Transport for London crisis grows as funding deadline looms

Midland Mainline
Midland Main Line

Original contract for this first-generation franchise was ten years (original expiry 2006). This was extended by two years on 10 August 2000 in return for further investment worth £238m, derived by diverting premiums which would otherwise have been payable to the Strategic Rail Authority. In the event, this franchise was replaced by East Midlands Trains in November 2007.
