This franchise was awarded on 14 August 2007 after GNER had been forced to withdraw, and National Express took over from GNER on 9 December 2007. However, National Express also encountered financial difficulties with East Coast, and surrendered its contract to the Department for Transport with effect from 13 November 2009.
