A contract of seven years and three months was awarded to Prism Rail in 1996, and the franchise passed to National Express Group in 2000 when it bought Prism Rail. The West Anglia routes were transferred to the new Greater Anglia franchise 1 April 2004, while the remaining WAGN franchise was extended for two years until its Great Northern routes became part of the new Thameslink franchise 1 April 2006.
