type Press release note 298
The Department of Transport is inviting nominations for membership of its Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC). As statutory advisers to the Department on transport and mobility for disabled people the DPTAC makes an input to Government policy in this area. The main Committee and its working groups advise on a wide range of transport issues from the Orange Badge Scheme to the design of new public transport vehicles. Membership of the Committee is limited to 20 people, of whom half must be disabled people. It is also essential that the membership reflects the widest range of disability and transport issues. The Committee holds quarterly meetings in London. Members are unpaid but the Department of Transport meets the costs of travel for all meetings. Members are appointed for a three year period and the new appointments will be made by the Secretary of State for Transport in December 1995. Major disability organisations, transport industries and local authority associations are being invited to make nominations, but nominations are also welcome from anyone with relevant experience. Copies of the nomination form and the Committee's Annual report are available from the Department of Transport's Mobility Unit. Nominations close on 31 October 1995. Notes to Editors 1. The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee was set up under the Transport Act 1985 to advise the Secretary of State on transport policy as it affects the mobility of disabled people. 2. The Chairman of the Committee is Mr Robert Taylor OBE. 3. The Department of Transport's Mobility Unit provides the Secretariat for the Committee. Telephone number 0171-271 5256
