note 359

Train services began running again to Mansfield today after an
absence of 31 years, as the Transport Secretary Sir George Young
opened Stage 2 of the Robin Hood Line between Nottingham and
Mansfield Woodhouse.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Sir George said:

"We are here today to celebrate the considerable achievement of
reconstructing the Robin Hood Line. From 20 November there will be
regular railway passenger services between Nottingham and Mansfield
Woodhouse.

"I congratulate Nottinghamshire County Council, and their partners,
Mansfield and Ashfield district councils, who have also contributed
to the #20m scheme, which received a Government contribution of #6.5m
as well as funding from the EC.

"I wish the new train operator, Regional Railways Central, every
success with this line which opens up new routes and new choices for
people in North Nottinghamshire."

The full length of the line from Nottingham to Mansfield Woodhouse is
almost 19 miles. Some of the work has involved the upgrading of the
existing freight line, but over 2.5 miles is a new link, which has
meant the reconstruction of cuttings and embankments and the removal
of colliery shale from Kirkby Tunnel, Kirkby in Ashfield.

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. Robin Hood Line Stage 1 services have been operating between
Nottingham and Newstead since May 1993. Stage 2 extends train
services from Newstead to Mansfield Woodhouse.

2. The scheme has been promoted by Nottinghamshire County Council who
have also acted as project managers for the construction of the new
link. Railtrack have been responsible for the new trackwork and
signalling.

3. The Government has contributed #6.5m towards the construction of
Stage 2 from the Coal Regeneration Fund and there has been further
assistance from the European Regional Development Fund.

4. Regional Railways Central will be providing a broadly hourly
service throughout the day with additional peak hour and Saturday
trains.
