note (some figures illegible in originating copy)

Railtrack plans to invest over £5 billion and renew 2,500km of rail over the next 10 years - around the same distance from Plymouth in Devon to John O'Groats.

In addition to rail, Railtrack will also renew 5,500km of sleepers and 6,000km of ballast over the same 10 years as part of its plans to invest ?million a day on Britain's rail network. This will enable Railtrack to provide greater reliability, carrying capacity and safety.

Most of the renewal work will be done in the early part of the 10 year plan as the company eliminates inherited arrears of work. Railtrack intends to spend ?0 million on track work in both 1996/7 and 1997/8..

Much of the 32,000km of track is already in the modern form of continuous welded rail. However, Railtrack has initiated development work to improve techniques to obtain modern track and cost effective maintenance.

Railtrack is soon to introduce the first of a new generation of ballast replacement equipment - the Stoneblower - which allows more effective maintenance with minimal disruption to train services. It is also working to identify where programmes to replace and strengthen ballast and formation substructures will enhance overall track performance.
