Tube crime has dropped by a staggering 17.6 per cent, figures released today by London Underground reveal.

Violent crime fell by 13.2 per cent in the financial year 1996/7 compared with the previous year. Robberies fell by 6.3 per cent and there was an 18.8 per cent reduction in pickpocketing.

London Transport Chairman Peter Ford welcomed the results. He said: "Passenger security remains a top priority and these outstanding results bury the myth that crime on the Underground is worsening.

"I congratulate our staff and the British Transport Police for their efforts in ensuring that London Underground remains one of the safest metro systems in the world."
