New look for 18 Cornwall stations _______________________________________________________________
 type Press release
Eighteen stations in Cornwall are the pride of the county thanks to £500,000 of work carried out by Railtrack this year. These works are part of Railtrack’s station improvements programme that has been rolled out across the rail network.
Every one of the stations, listed overleaf, has had a facelift which includes relaying platform and car parking surfaces, renewing lighting columns, overhauling surface drainage and a number of stations are now benefiting from brand new waiting shelters replacing the old dilapidated ones.
The new waiting shelters have been designed with both comfort and safety in mind says Railtrack’s Mike Rolls. "The designs were discussed with the train operators who run the stations and local authorities to ensure that we took everyone’s needs into account.
"As a result the new shelters have been designed to a high quality using traditional materials giving a robust structure with low maintenance. The issue of public security was taken on board and incorporated within their design," said Mr Rolls.
Two designs of waiting shelter were agreed. One style has the traditional twin pitched roof with glazing at each end and the other, a single pitch roof supported by columns.
The advantages of the new style shelters over those previously specified is that they are low on maintenance, less prone to misuse, more in keeping with their environment and are well lit where there is an electricity supply.
As well as the shelters and other refurbishment to the stations, much of the fencing has been replaced and the old style railings have been reinstated where appropriate and with financial assistance from Cornwall County Council.
