type Press release
A three-and-a-half million pound investment by Forth Ports in a new port at Tilbury has been welcomed by Railtrack. Located on the site of the former Tilbury Riverside station the terminal was officially opened on Monday 24 November by local MEP Richard Howitt. It is capable of handling up to 30,000 containers or swapbodies a year as well as other forms of rail-based freight. Initially trains will be running daily to Valencia in Spain, via the Channel Tunnel, the transit time being just 48 hours.
Railtrack's Freight Manager, Vince Lucas, commented "This is exactly the sort of imaginative development needed to grow rail's share of the freight market and hopefully to meet the Governments objectives outlined in its Integrated Transport Policy consultation document.
"Every single container movement means one less lorry on our ever increasingly congested road network. The Port of Tilbury constructed this terminal and connected it to the rail network in just five months and should be congratulated on their remarkable achievement."
