The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) today described as "sensible" DETR's review of Railtrack's Safety and Standards Directorate which recommends that Railtrack continue to be responsible for railway safety standards pending Lord Cullen's Inquiry.
ATOC Director General George Muir said: "These decisions will clarify the steps we need to take to further improve railway safety and provide better accountability in the industry.
"We have no reason to believe that Railtrack's Safety & Standards Directorate (S&SD) allows any interests other than those of passenger and staff safety to influence its work. However, we welcome the decision to make the separation between the safety regulation function and Railtrack's commercial activities even more transparent," Mr Muir said.
