Sub-surface line bidders shortlisted
The PPP is well on course to deliver a multi-billion pound investment to the London Underground - with today's LT announcement of the bidders shortlisted to bid for the sub-surface lines public-private partnership.
Companies bidding for the deep-tube line contracts are due to get their bids in at the end of this week.
The PPP will keep London Underground operations - trains, stations, safety and signalling - in the public sector. The private sector will deliver a massive programme of engineering and upgrading work, to the tune of around £8bn new investment and £5bn maintenance over the next fifteen years.
Minister for London Keith Hill said:
"The Underground PPP - publicly-owned, publicly-run, properly-financed - is on its way. It will bring billions of pounds worth of investment over the next 15 years - reducing passenger journey times, making services more reliable and improving the quality of the travelling environment.
"Top private sector engineering companies are prepared to get stuck in to undertake essential upgrade and maintenance work.
"LU will be able to concentrate on delivering the best possible service to its passengers - confident in the knowledge that companies with a proven track record will be looking after the Tube's infrastructure."
NOTES FOR EDITORS
LU expects to issue invitations to tender during the week commencing 3 April. Bids are due back by 15 September, with detailed negotiation completed in early 2001.
