Train operators are redoubling their efforts to re-build passenger confidence and deliver improved services following the problems caused by gauge corner cracking, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) said today.

Commenting on the results of the Strategic Rail Authority's report, On Track, covering the six months to 31 March, including the aftermath of Hatfield, which was affected by gauge corner cracking and the wettest winter since records began ATOC Director General, George Muir said:

"The last six weeks or so has seen a recovery in punctuality, which I hope passengers have noticed. Four out of five trains are now running punctually, and passengers are returning to the railway. We are now very close to the levels of performance seen before Hatfield.

"I know that Railtrack and its contractors are totally focused on getting things fully back to normal. Train operators too are redoubling their efforts."

" Although passenger satisfaction has taken a knock, 69% were satisfied with their journey. However, this is not enough and we must aim for every passenger to have a good, enjoyable journey.
