 type Press release
note ORR/1/13
The Transport Select Committee has today published its Rail 2020 report which examines government proposals to reform the railway.
Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) Chief Executive, Richard Price, said: “We welcome the Transport Select Committee’s Rail 2020 report. It recognises the railways’ great successes in recent years, and highlights the Office of Rail Regulation’s role in improving safety, efficiency and transparency across the whole rail sector. “The report also emphasises that the railways must continue to deliver improved value for money and cut costs for passengers and taxpayers. ORR will never allow savings to come at the expense of safety, and has overseen Network Rail’s successful delivery of £15bn efficiency savings since 2004-05, alongside improvements in safety which have elevated Britain’s railways to being among the safest in Europe.
“This year, as part of our assessment of what Network Rail must achieve by 2019 and the money it needs to do so, we will create a framework for the industry to deliver even better safety, value and performance. Everyone has a part to play, and our review will focus on bringing the whole industry together to deliver a better railway for its customers and taxpayers.” For more information about delivering the plan for Britain’s railways between 2014-2019, visit: http://www.rail-reg.gov.uk/pr13/ The Rail 2020 report can be viewed at: http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/transport-committee/news/rail-2020-report/
