Acquired Railtrack plc on 3 October 2002, and was a 'not for dividend' private sector company set up by Government. *This status changed on 1 September 2014 when Network Rail became a government body in the public sector. The day-to-day management of routes (territories) was devolved in 2011 to business units which are run as far as possible as standalone operations.
